Teaching

I love teaching writing almost as much as I love writing. I teach writing classes throughout the Seattle area, for organizations like Richard Hugo House.  My students have written and published novels and non-fiction books, essays and short stories. My specialties are the novel, the non-fiction book proposal, memoir and family history. I’ve also been a guest speaker at regional writing conferences.

Current Class

Master Class in Prose: Non-Fiction
Monday evenings, Sep 12-Nov 14, 7 to 9 PM

A class for non-fiction writers working on essays or chapters in a book. We’ll create and complete two essays (or chapters) in this ten week class. We’ll look at different ways of generating prose, try out new structures, polish our sentences and prepare our pieces for submission, using many techniques from Priscilla Long’s The Writer’s Portable Mentor. This is not a critique class–we will focus on in-class writing and homework assignments, as well as close reading of great examples–but you will have some opportunities to share work and give feedback to classmates.
